Umpire and Press Box lineup cards from the final game of the 1978 season for the Padres.

The game was significant for a number of reasons:
  • In this game, Gaylord Perry became just the 3rd pitcher of all time (after Walter Johnson and Bob Feller) to strike out 3,000 batters. To this day, there are far fewer pitchers with 3,000 strikeouts than hitters with 3,000 hits
  • This game marked the first time that Ozzie Smith (who was a rookie in 1978) did his trademark back flip. There is a cool SABR article about this
  • The game featured 2 future 300 win/3000 K pitchers facing off against each other (Perry against Don Sutton). Perry would also win the Cy Young in 1978, adn this was obviously his final start of the season.

I bought a lot of Padres-related lineup cards years ago but was unaware of Perry's feat at the time. Maybe a year ago I learned of it, but searching through my collection, could never find these, and worried that I might have sold them.

I recently moved, and somehow, they turned up now.

Edit: Not sure why they are sideways. The files on my computer are not sideways.

Great stuff everyone!

I’d like to find a vintage Reds line-up card from late 60s - mid 70s.

Here’s one that’s been on eBay for quite a while. I like the fact that it’s very clean, done in pen (not carbon copied) and features the infancy of the Big Red Machine….

https://www.ebay.com/itm/155081976576

But this is outside of my wheelhouse. We can all see what the seller is asking, but can Jeff (or the other experts here) tell me what it’s actually worth?

It’s a game that the Reds lost, and I could not see anything of significance that occurred in this game. Thanks for any help the forum can provide!

Default First date & 20th anniversary present

Just for fun, here is a completely different way to showcase a dugout lineup card.
My wife Mary and I went to a Tigers baseball game for our 1st date about 33 years ago...

They absolutely smoked the Bronx Bombers that day! Our seats were right along the 1st baseline on the railing next to the visitor's bullpen. I still recall HOF Goose Gossage warming up in front of us, huffing and puffing and absolutely making the catcher's mitt pop with every fastball.

Ironically, almost 20 years later, I saw that a guy on the East Coast was selling a lot of Tigers dugout cards to games in the same era as our 1st date. I didn't see the dugout card to our game, so I sent the seller a message. I gave him the game date and told him what the personal significance was. Amazingly, he had the dugout card and actually sold it to me for $25!!! Unreal

With our 20th anniversary right around the corner, I incorporated the dugout card into a unique gift to my wife that included the dugout card, wedding photos and a business card from a French restaurant that we went to on our 2nd date. This piece sits on the mantel above our fireplace still to this day.

Pricing items like these are exceedingly difficult because it is nearly impossible to find another one. Personally, I'm a buyer on basically any vintage lineup card (and have been for quite a few years), and I don't own a standard non-carbon copy lineup card from that era (I do have a few from the mid-1950's that all came in one lot and I have carbon copies from Game 4 of the 1976 World Series, but believe I have just 1 carbon copy lineup card from a regular season game from that era.

If I was going to say a range I think is reasonable, I would think $100-$200 in auction, but if the right people saw it, it could easily go for quite a bit more.
