I bought and busted a lot of Walgreens retail boxes for the yellow bordered inserts. Base modern cards are basically a waste of money compared to the box break costs but are very attractive cards:

2020 Heritage Trout cards (L-R: action variation, purple bordered refractor, base card)

2020 Heritage Greatest Moments (hobby box topper) Bryce Harper:

2020 Topps Heritage Super (hobby box topper) Ohtani:

2019 Topps Kershaw Holiday variation:

2002 Donruss DK Originals Jeter:

2016 Topps Now Ichiro:

2014 Panini Golden Age Bad News Bears:

Topps Project 2020 cards:

My internal conflict is if I spend $xyz for modern, what can't I get vintage or pre-war.

I agree with Exhibitman, if you don't want to rip packs or buy sets, go online to Topps and pick up some of the individual cards online. The Topps Living Set has some great artwork, and you only have to buy players you're interested in. Topps Now has cars commemorating achievements, some auto'd. Occasionally the set Throwback Thursday has some nice designs too. I never feel like I've wasted money on Topps online product like when I buy modern packs.

And like other collectors, since I'm a Reds team collector, my collection wouldn't be complete without modern stars. I buy Larkin and Votto primarily, but I must admit I got caught up with Jonathan India when it appeared he had a real chance to win ROY.
