I am in the process of a long overdue cataloging of my Paul Blair collection and I have several questions I am struggling to resolve. I am still working to see if I can answer some myself, but this one I cannot figure out: TCDB's Paul Blair checklist lists a 1970 Traffic Safety set and a 1971 DMV Safety set. The two sets have identical checklists, but I cannot find any source other than TCDB that lists them separately. To complicate things, the 1971 DMV set has pictures for each card, while the 1970 has no pictures. So, I can't even compare images.

To make things even stranger, on eBay you can only find these cards for the Washington Senators. Not a single Oriole to be found. I suspect that there is only one such set and it is erroneously listed twice on TCDB. Can any of the experts here clear up for me whether there are one or two of these traffic safety sets? Thank you.

Here is the one I have:

Jeff,

I am aware of only the one Orioles set from 1970, while the Senators did a similar set in 1971. You can often find them as uncut sheets.

Hope this helps.

Default New Brooks Robinson postcard

Hi guys,

I just picked up what I believe is a new 1966 team issued postcard variation of Brooks, or at least new to me. It's not listed in the postcard books I use for reference.

I believe the postcard is trimmed about 1/4" at the top, but is still a different cropping variation from the other two I have. The back of the postcard is postmarked 1967, but has the characteristics of the 1966 issue.

The two differences include a gap between the V neck of the uniform and the border of the photo and the stripe of the sleeve isn't visible in the bottom right.

Here's the new variation (bottom left) compared to the two others I have.

Yes, it helps a lot. TCDB is a great resource, but because it is crowdsourced, there are obvious faults. This is the third time I have found a single set with multiple descriptions/entries. The other two I was able to resolve on my own.

While I am sure the numbers will change as I continue to research, I think I have identified 210 unique Paul Blair cards, of which I have 146. Of the balance I don't have, there are close to 30 that I am ambivalent about collecting, like Tristar cut auto cards and Topps Heritage buybacks.

Default 1971 Japan Tour Booklet

Searched but didn't see this item posted here previously. Looks like this might have been part of someone's scrapbook in the past or some type of binder based on the hole punches. Otherwise in nice shape.

Interestingly, I also have that program/magazine in my collection and it has punch holes in nearly the exact same locations. I wish I could read Japanese to get a better idea what the content is all about.

The contents inside mine are all in English. Are you saying yours is Japanese?

Tim,

You're probably correct. I'm in Florida and mine is in Maine, so I can't verify, but the cover is in English. The other publications I have from the 1971 Japan tour all have Japanese covers.

Here's the others I have from the 1971 Japan tour

Default 1969 Transogram

Hi, everyone. This week thought to share my Transogram Collection. I am collecting two sets (not sure why...I guess because I have so many complete boxes and about 20 without the figurine...they are folded). The 1969 Transogram Box Set consists of 60 different players. The box included a figurine with stadium backround, large card to be cutout on the back and a smaller picture on the top of the box or flap. Brooks appears in the set and below you will see a PSA 4 graded box (highest graded), a PSA 5 smaller card and the larger card (PSA 8...tied as highest graded). A complete box with the figurine is also displayed. The Transogram Set is very diffigult to put together. Mantle, Mays, Aaron, and Clemente are in the set and they can cost between $1,000 - $2,000. Brooks is impossible to find and he can fetch a large sum, too. I have a Brooks complete box listed on ebay for sale, which I doubt will sell (PSA 1 with a sticker / price on it). The boxes often times have issues with the cellophen and price stickers on the flap where the smaller card appears. Normal wear and tear is also an issue. The cards were meant to be cut out when purchased, which is another reason the complete box is hard to find. Along with Brooks, Dave McNally and Frank Robinson are in the set. The Transogram appeard again in 1970 with 5 New York Mets boxes (3 players each...Ryan and Searver are on separate boxes) and other players in a 3 player box format. I will stick with the 1969 Set. I picked up 4 this past week that puts me at 45 complete boxes out of 60. I am about 30 out of 60 for my second set. I have 20 additonal boxes that are trade bait, if anyone has a box laying around available for a trade. The 1969 Transogram has a store display that is really cool with the photos of the players. I would love to find that display and store my set. Anyway, included are my Brooksies and my boxes stacked in a couple storage boxes.
