For less than your budgeted number, maybe much less, you could buy a Cleveland Indians Photo Pack. Doby was included every year 1947-1955. I highly recommend the 1948 Pack. Its crammed with HOFers. In addition to Doby there's Paige, Greenberg, Feller, Boudreaux, Lopez, Lemon, McKechnie and Veeck.
Here's a picture of the '48 Pack I found on eBay. Doby with a great smile.

The photo pack that riggs336 recommended looks like a beautiful Doby. I was going to suggest a 1954 Dan-Dee Potato Chips Larry Doby in a PSA 5 or 6. Strive to find one with as little toning as possible (it's actually potato chip grease stained). Dan-Dees are beautiful cards, Doby looks superb, and this issue falls on the same year the Indians blitzed the rest of the league, won the AL pennant by a mile, and Larry had one of his best years. 'Nuf said. I wish you the best, bro. For a time in the late '60s, I was on a Doby kick, and bought several of his cards. --- Brian Powell

Aesthetically, at least for me (I know you prefer the 1951), the 1950 Bowman is his prettiest card. You can obtain a very nice copy for $250.00.
I also like the 1949 Bowman card. Although it may take some time and patience, you could probably obtain a copy for around $250.00 - albeit a low grade. Good luck. Buy what you like. |

I'm a big fan of both his 50 and 51 bowman cards but as they have both mentioned already, I'd say his 52 topps or 57 topps as they are favorites of mine.
