Here’s a cool sound movie of Honus Wagner in spring training 1933, when he was a coach with the Pirates. He talks about his baseball career and the ways the game has changed, and is shown hitting, fielding, and coaching third base. HOFers Pie Traynor and Paul Waner make brief cameo appearances.

Fantastic video! Thank you for sharing that!
I too marvel at how active he was for his age in that. For some reason, I didn't expect him to sound like that. It wasn't so much of the Casey Kasem experience where you can't believe that voice came out of that head, but it was still a bit surprising to me for some reason. Not sure what I was expecting. Anyway, thanks again for sharing that. That's a great glimpse into his personality. |

I watched that Johnson video on another platform (sadly I can't remember where). There was something done to the audio speed, he doesn't actually sound like a chipmonk!

I should add the obvious. Thank you for sharing that video, it's fantastic. Based on the way he hit at 59, he would have been a sight to behold in his prime.

WAAAAAAAY Cool! Thanks for sharing!
I was expecting a stronger accent! Was I hearing things or were most everyone calling him "JOHN" instead of Honus? (Or Hans or Honnie?) Last edited by Eggoman; 11-16-2020 at 03:17 PM. |

Was this filmed in Los Angeles at Wrigley Field ? The house over the left field wall looks the same as the TV Home Run Derby field .

I could watch hours of this era of baseball. As a coach for high-level high school players, seeing how effortless an aging star still flips baseballs to turn a 6-4-3 is amazing to me. The banter is fantastic!!!

I think you're right! It's definitely in Los Angeles, and Wrigley Field would be a logical place for a major league team to be training. It does look like Wrigley, including when Wagner is coaching third.

That was really cool. You always hear so much about his name and his German ancestry, etc., that I never expected him to sound so thoroughly run-of-the-mill American like that. Awesome!! Thanks for posting it.

The catcher has zero fear that Wagner won’t put the ball in play - no chest or shin guards!
This is gold. (Would love to hear more about the Walter Johnson clip references above.... any tips where to find that?) |

Gettyimages has miles of this stuff. After watching the Wagner footage, I checked out Connie Mack from the thirties. It's all fantastic.
There was an old joke about Wagner. Somebody asked him who the new second baseman was and Wagner supposedly replied, "Dots Miller." I was expecting European accented English, something that isn't there. Walter Johnson's voice comes across high and nasal, but that may have as much to do with the primitive sound equipment. Maybe Henry Thomas can give us some insight. lumberjack |

Yes, I was a little surprised by that. I was also surprised that Paul Waner kept shouting "Wooo."

It's weird, in watching his movements, especially with those unusually long arms, I really got a strong Robin Williams vibe off of him. Would've been an easy casting session if they had decided to make a Wagner bio-pic 20 years ago.

Thanks Shoeless Moe...
I have seen the clips of him pitching and in slow motion - is it me or does it look like he’s hardly throwing that hard? Looks like a kid trying to skip a rock across a pond more than pitching 90+ MPH Quote:

Walter could throw mid to high 90s naturally with that motion. Imagine what he could do with modern training optimizing his throwing motion. Some people are just naturally gifted.
