Great card, Ben. I guess I ran you up a bit on that.

You need to finish your Tolstoi run so I can actually win some again . Very nice pickup, and interesting to see the price disparity on the 3 Tolstoi's this seller had. The Stone multiple set collectors needed closed a lot higher than the Northridge most have. 17 of them is no easy feat!

I was about 5 seconds too late on the 3 BIN's, that seller could have got far more if he knew what he had. He priced them the same as his Mecca and Hassan cards

Default T218 Tolstoi

Thanks, G, like my paternal grandmother told me, "no good deed goes unpunished." When you explained to me that T218 Tolstoi had 50 cards, and provided a checklist, I went all-in, thinking I'm going to complete it. I promise not to hoard, and trade all my dupes..Rob 18/50

I fear I have simply been driving the price up on a couple of them for you, Rob! Were you the winner of the Young Donahue yesterday? I thought I stood a good chance with my bid but ended up being the third bidder. Looks like these cards great scarcity is no longer a secret. I am sitting at 20/50, 0 duplicates, including the Jack Johnson, but it has been some time since I've been able to add another one. 88% of the way through the whole T218 Master Set. It seems to me that most of us chasing the Tolstoi's all have most of the same cards (Like Jeffries, Northridge, Sedley, etc.), and nobody has got much further than half way on them. I have been tracking T218 since 2004, and I haven't seen more than maybe 10 Tolstoi backs at most of any one front.

Greg, yes, I got that one yesterday, here's a link to an old thread from 2003 that I started, naively talking about T218 Tolstoi. It does seem that some of the track guys are easier to find, maybe just a coincidence. Hopefully, higher prices will bring out more cards to the market and we can all complete our sets. Rob

Ha, well I was still pretty pleased with the final price. And since you literally wrote the book on boxing cards I'll just take it as an affirmation of my taste?

Ok. Lampos are just popular and expensive. I was hoping to steal a deal.

It's the same image as on about a dozen other Italian cards of the era, but Lampo made the best design and made the cards bigger than others, so they "win".

Hello all,

I don’t really post much but I’ve been selling some cards and meeting so many great people that I figured I should at least pop on, say thanks, and post some cards.

I’m a low grade pre-WWI boxing set builder. I’m also a Jack Johnson and Joe Jeannette “active career” collector. I started collecting Johnson cards about nine or so years ago. They were relatively cheap then and I managed to pick up the common ones and many of the harder ones. Things stalled about a year ago as prices went up. I resorted to making desperate posts in the BST looking for a low grade e77, Susini, etc.

... Then one evening (PST), Scooter729 posts a horrible condition e77 Johnson on eBay. Scott had once sold me one of my favorite cards in my collection, a N162 Sullivan. So, I proceed to absolutely blow up his inbox. He’s was really kind about it all. The rest is history. Thanks Scott!

The e77 is pretty rare but not one of my favorites. Why does it look like Jack is in the process of balding??

The Johnson fits in well with a stack of terrible condition e77s that I just bought from Rhy. As a low-grade set builder, it amazing to find nine cards from the e77s in a week!

Finally, I made a trade with RC. Thanks so much! Even in bad shape it’s a gorgeous card.

So thanks everyone! Thanks for helping me get further in a Johnson collection than I ever thought that I would. Also, thanks for purchasing some cards so I can feed the habit! It’s very much appreciated!

Be well!
David
