Update on this:
Seems that the draft board didn't find his excuse about being the sole proprietor of a store very convincing. The July 18, 1918 issue of the Grand Rapids Tribune reports a list of draftees departing for Camp Grant in Illinois, including one Charles M. Nash. I searched casualty lists reported in late 1918 and early 1919 (some of them took a while to come through), and he doesn't appear on any of them. So I'm guessing that he made it through okay. |
