Putting important documents, family photos and pre-1980 baseball cards in plastic containers as Hurricane Irma bears down. In addition to 1956,57 and 1960-79 sets there's a separate box of Clemente, Mays and Aaron cards

I highly recommend taping the boxes closed as those pop open pretty easily. I'd run it right along the outside of the lid.
Good luck this weekend! I'll be thinking of you and your family as this hits.

I know you can't fit all of that.... but it is recommended any important documents, photos, etc. to be stored in a dishwasher. They are sealed and attached to counters so not likely to be as disturbed. I suggest putting anything in plastic first, then in the dishwasher and close it tight.
Also, the tub to your washing machine can be used either to protect stuff or to fill with ice and drinks so if the power is out for a few days you don't have to open the fridge every time you want a drink. If you use it for ice, you can drain the water right out. If you use it to protect, wrap plastic around everything you can and fit it in there. Just some suggestions I've heard that make sense. Good luck! |

Ah, weather experts sweating bullets as of this time, hoping their Irma track prognostications don't turn out to be wolf-crying. The dang thing has been crawling along the Cuban coast for twelve hours, tantalizing the guys watching it and insisting it will turn north at any moment. If Irma decides to head into the gulf instead of following predictions, all of our cards will probably remain safe.

Good luck and stay safe!
I always imagined that putting cards or other items along desiccant inside of those ammunition cans (metal or plastic ones with a rubber gasket on the lid) would suffice in an emergency. |

Hope all faired alright during the storm. I still don't have any power and I have limbs down all over, but at least the family was safe.

FYI -- My family and I, and my cards, made it safely through Irma. Thanks for the concern and the storage tips. I've been through four hurricanes now and would be happy not to do it again, but it is a great excuse to go through the collection.
