And the card companies have dug themselves so deep a hole with new names like flawless and transcendent, and other garbage. Where does it start? It all has to be a one-up of the previous product. What is the upper price limit? This is all made for the case breakers. Few people actually pay $22000 for this unless they are going to sell spots in a case or box break of it. People who buy this crap for resale are going to get their backsides handed to them.
One of the countless reasons i stick to prewar.
Couldn't agree more! I thought hacking up a Ruth or Cobb jersey initially was painful but at least you could use that one jersey for hundreds/thousands of cards and it's kind of neat to think that a lot of smaller collectors could own at least a small piece of an item worn by Ruth (never understood the allure of the bat cards). Cutting up contracts & documents is savage though and only one collector gets to have it. I once had a DiMaggio "cut" that consisted of chopping up one of those pinnacle autographed cards and then framing it in the new card. Total waste!

Additional cut autos Topps has screwed up. But if you read the rest of the thread, even the modern card collectors this this is a #toppsfail.

The DiMaggio is kind of humorous (it a comi-tragic way) because you can see the start of it on the other side. It's like "Tell Joe to sit down."

I dont understand why they couldn't fold it, since the original was creased anyway. Let whoever wins it decide whether to keep as a card or pull it out of the case and display it whole.

Actually this card's flaw has nothing to do with the autograph, but with the picture, which is not an image of Joe Maggio, who played 5 years in the Yankee farm system from 1958-62.

It really makes you wonder about the knuckleheads they have designing these cards. I'd think this would have had much more potential for something nice looking.

Next break starts in 10 minutes at the link. Saw the Dizzy Dean cut auto boxtopper get pulled this afternoon, and it was actually done well. The card looks like it was designed for that cut.

Seeing the cut up Matty auto really makes you wonder WTF those idiots were thinking about when they destroyed that piece. It's on fleabay for $19,999.95.

If it sold for $7170 last year at auction, does anyone think it has more value to it now that it's been defaced, phuc'd up and stuffed in a stupid topps holder? Still can't believe those idiots cut it up....

Well for the folks that bought these sets for an investment the market seems to have crashed. I won two cards on ebay one for $750 less than the highest sale of 6 days ago and another about $500 less than the highest sale of 8 days ago. Most cards can be had for far less than the price you would pay to get in on one of these breaks. The invitations to the Topps 65th anniversary party with Kris Bryant sell for over 3 grand. And a couple of the complete base and sketch sets sold for $6,500. But day by day the prices keep dropping. And for me anyway fun to watch..if anyone cares I got a Ichiro /25 and a Bonds /52. I wanted to spice up my 3000 hit and 500 HR displays..Happy Holidays..

$3K to stand in a crowded Vegas nightclub and quickly get to shake the hand of a major leaguer, while I drink a watered down screwdriver and eat a few carrot sticks dipped in ranch dressing.

Gee, where do I sign up.

While I am still looking forward to participating in the set break, this cut auto of Campanella (or his crotch, really) is a travesty. I almost feel like this is a parody.

When I first read this set/series had sold out, I was thinking, which was against my original thoughts, that those that purchased this set will now likely make out like bandits, but after seeing the mess they made of the cards and what they did to some great memorabilia, the only Bandits around are those at Topps.

They should have designed the card around the autograph, not the other way around, or they should have sought out more suitable autographs to fit their design. Pure stupidity.

It still doesn't change the idea though. Because this is suppose to be an ultrahigh end product. Why not make sure you were going to have the best design possible. In this case they didn't improve it. Since there is not a photo they could have left it as a full item and just matted it and framed it. It just looks tacky cut and not having the matte frame it very well.

I understand the casebreaks and the ability to get these items at great prices (gambling for memorabilia), but there is a company called Super Break who has figured out how to give out the entire memorabilia piece. Why can't Topps figure out how to do that with these cut signatures? It isn't like a bat where they can fill multiple products these are a single signature pieces repackaged to a single card that SOMETIMES (as is the case with the Mathewson) looks worse.

Again I have no problems repackaging a cut auto, but it shouldn't look rushed and lazy.
Answer to Bold Pt. 1

A good friend of mine told me this: Topps has figured out a way to sell the memorabilia item AND put their name on it.

Answer to Bold Pt. 2

Nobody is pushing Topps to be better when it comes to baseball cards. They have the exclusive MLB rights. They can rush and be lazy as much as they want, and as long as people still buy baseball cards, they will be around because they are the only producer of MLB licensed baseball cards.

I hate it.

I am not saying you are wrong about Topps thinking, but to think because they have a monopoly on MLB licensed cards and therefore able to do whatever is a very short sighted way of thinking.

Topps only has the rights until 2020. They have lost NHL to Upper Deck and NFL and NBA to Panini. Currently they only have MLS and MLB. MLS is a growing sport, but there is no way they will survive without MLB. I think Topps does a lot of things right, but they really need to take these suggestions to heart.

Set break was tonight, streamed online. I had never done one before. It was pretty thrilling, which I wasn't expecting. The host was engaging with a touch of Don West DNA. The two biggest pulls in the case featured baseball icons Tupac Shakur (cut auto from a personal check) and Daisy Ridley (1/1 autograph...which gets the kids excited). I actually did very well with my two slots, getting limited parallel autographs of a soccer legend and a Cubs wunderkind. I checked ebay and both are currently going for crazy prices...So if I cashed in now, financially I could make a really nice gain and buy vintage with the profits. That sounds like a plan to me. This experience was like I imagine bungee jumping is like...a lot of fun to try once but kinda stupid and not worth the risk.

You're looking at it the way many who play in those circles do: for a nominal amount, it's possible to get a card worth thousands (sometimes tens of thousands) or at least break even or make money with a high draft slot. Congrats on hitting a Pele auto. The Daisy Ridley would probably go for a couple thousand.

Thanks! I can see the allure of participating in these now having done one (and batting 1.000). God bless those who do them all the time but for me it felt just a few steps away from a casino game. Definitely fun though for a one shot...I would probably feel differently if I walked away with a Dwight Gooden sketch and a Harmon Killebrew base.

From someone who was in on 2 set breaks and got commons you would have felt different.

Like the lottery there are a few winners a boat load of losers and the person running it makes out like a bandit.

Signed checks go for $2,500. So one tenth of the entire cost.

Somehow I'm having a hard time envisioning Tupac Shakur writing a check. I'd like to go on thinking he paid for everything with stacks of hundreds.
