I have been to quite a few Nationals and I do some autographs, too.
Yes, you can bring your own items or buy things at the show. I've done both depending on who it is. The VIP bag will usually give you access to all of the freebie autos. Some people trade tickets to get extras of their favorites for ones they won't use. And most definitely bring something to carry your stuff! I recommend a stand up rolling case, usually available in the suitcase sections of most stores. You can get one on the cheap, doesn't have to be expensive. I like those because you can carry everything from wax to balls to cases and binders to 8x10's! I usually take some time before the show to organize my case for maximum viability.
