When I collected mid 70's-early 80's...I put the good stuff in 9 pocket plastic sheets in office type binders. The rest was in boxes.
At shows you'd see the really valuable cards in thick plastic tombs. I never owned one of those!!!! I also must have missed the "revolution" in card protection while on a hiatus as when i returned in 89' or so...at which time my vintage collection was stored in top loaders eventually with penny sleeves as well.
