So when did Hal Chase get enshrined in the HOF?? Currently there are 15 different listings for Chase cards on the Bay that all reference him as a HOF'er. Is this a new phenomena or just a stale sales tactic I've overlooked previously?

I could see it as an easy mistake. One person makes the mistake , another person copies the mistake , etc. some people assume any recognizable name from T206 must be a HOFer.

Bill you didn't overlook anything. I see this happen all the time. Most likely a mistake by the seller. I've seen seller's list players with the wrong names quite frequently and listing players who aren't HOF players even more so. On the other hand I think that some of them do it to try and sell the card and hope that some people don't know.

Chase is not in the HOF, but his cards are priced like those of a minor HOFer, for the same reason cards of the Black Sox are similarly priced -- he was banned from baseball for being corrupt and tied to gamblers, and was part of the general corruption in the sport that culminated in the Black Sox.

I bet at some point in his career Chase took 5/1 odds that he'd make the HOF. He also lost that bet.

Chase is not holding a HOF trophy. The HOF did not exist for another 20-25 years until after that card was issue.
If Chase was taking 5/1 odds on making the HOF he was being pretty optimistic given the HOF didn't exist. One of like the modem players who have incentive bonuss written into their contract for winning the MLB Dvisional Series MVP. They don't award an MVP for this series so these players have no way to earn that bonus today. But MAYBE someday. So they have their agents write it into their contracts. |
