I've noticed a few red Cobbs selling lately with factory 42 backs. I know this is rarer but am not sure how if affects the value of the cards. Any idea on what percentage increase in value the factory 42 adds? Does it matter if it's a high profile card like a nice cobb, or a common?

So maybe you can do the math and that would be the percentage for a common with a PSA 2 grade. For a HOF player and Cobb to boot I'd imagine the % may be a bit higher.

I had no idea it made that much of a difference on a common. That's almost 10x a regular piedmont back (150 vs 18)
The 5.5 at goodwin last night closed at 8.8k for a red cobb factory 42 piedmont back. It's hard to say how much of that is for the rarer back and how much is the buzz surrounding these cobb backs or just the cobb market heating up in general. Either way an impressive result.

I agree with Josh that Piedmont Factory 42 cards tend to go for at least 10 times the price of a common with a common back. We're talking several hundred dollars for anything better than a total beater. Luke Lyon here on the board had some with the borders trimmed off on three sides, and I think he sold them at $150 each with no problem.

Yes, pretty rare indeed. True, the commons go for $300+

I think this back is extremely scarce, and does demand a big premium. Normally rare backs realize a much higher percentage of price increase versus a HOFer. Having said that, especially as hot as Cobbs are these days, I thought the one in Goodwin last night was a pretty good buy for someone....

Thanks for the responses, I still have a lot to learn about t206s. As rare as they are it seems unusual that the last few red Cobbs I have noticed were all Factory 42 backs. It seems the multiplier in terms of value must be much less on higher end cards as these aren't selling for 10x or even 2x what a normal Cobb would.

these 2 can give you the latest on "piedy 42" info....
I own 14......I have been collecting them for about 20 + years......they are tough .....close to between a Carolina and ab 460 in terms of rarirty... as in the case of the actual "combo"....as holds true in any back rarity collecting in the "monster"(front and back combination) , some "commons" appear far less than others within a particular subset.... as with the case holds true within the piedy 42 subset.....cobbs appear more often than some of the other "common" players within the piedy 42 subset... I can tell you what commons are tougher in , for example, the sovereign 460, American beauty 350 no frame and 460's, piedy 42's, subsets ect ect....just from dabbling in collecting the subsets at one time or another.... red cobbs, to the contarary of other subsets, are very scarce in the sov 460's subset.... Tim, Jim, Ted, and a ton of other experts would definitely be able to school us all on these... but, the beauty of it all, is no one really knows for sure....we learn something new about this great set everyday......we are eternally deciphering the mysteries of T206 ![]() |

For P42's, I typically expect to pay 10x - 15x the price of a common back in the same condition. Some fool

I can see I have a lot to learn if I ever decide to pick up more than a few t206s here and there. I appreciate the great responses and information.

thanks my friend!
![]() ![]() ![]() scot is an animal when it comes to T206....another mentor of mine my research indicated about a 50/50 split in the "light" vs" "dark" or , as I call them, piedy 42 baby blue and piedmont "blue" or the darker blue ones .....at first, when I collected them, I thought they were exlusively printed in the "baby" blue and that how I would spot them "in the wild" at first glance on ebay.....then after a while, I noticed the "dark" blue ones.....I thought they were "rarer" than the baby blues.....after many years of collecting, I noticed it was almost split 50/50 in the distribution of light vs. dark....other collectors also contributed....was pretty neat to "discover" the differentiation.... subjects, I noticed, where printed mostly in both......no "exclusive" players attached to either a dark or light blue piedy 42 ![]() are you going to the national?? would love to meet up with you....i'll be brining the "circus"....I want you to see so bad! please email me when you get a chance.....id love to chat ![]() |

Craig and Johnny
Both the backs of the UZIT and the PIEDMONT 42 cards have varying intensities of blue ink. American Litho. (ALC) printed these 2 backs concurrently at the tail end of the T206 press runs (circa Feb-Mar 1911). At the same time ALC was starting up their Gold-bordered sports & non-sports cards. There- fore, it's possible that the printers just did a sloppy job in the application of blue ink on the final run of these T206's. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() TED Z .
