Hey there Chris and Chris,
The pants are definitely hockey. They can be dated by the reeds, and their diminutive size and style to about the mid 1920's. Here's a pair of NOS pants from circa 1910. Pre reeds, with just quilted padding comparable to the pair shown in the Spalding ad. I hope this helps. Also - Is it possible Chris to post or DM me a pick of the photo and write-up for the Spalding Shamrock hockey stick in that catalog? There should be one... Thanks! Brent
