That would make sense, they were a promotional giveaway during that fateful season of 1969 along with the color photos (Jewel Foods), frosted glass tumblers, coffee mugs, bumper stickers (Dunkin' Donuts), dinner place mats (IHOP), etc., from Chicago area stores and restaurants.

Delighted that Todd revived this thread, and coincidentally enough, he did so with one from a set of cards we wanted to show off:
![]() ![]() Funny thing -- we're sure you're right and that those were on Team Flakes -- but we remember cutting them out of the backs of boxes of some short-lived Bugles/Doritos-like snack food with a name like Zonkers or Zippity-Doos or Fiffle-Faffle or something... Back to Bob's original post and the invitation to display some non-baseball, non-sports, '60s oddities as well -- does anyone else remember these? ![]() They came with a thick slab of minutely-ribbed transparent plastic, same size as the cards, which you'd place over a card and then subtly wiggle them together so that the shaded areas of the image would appear to be solid and moving. Kind of a sadistic set, really, with helpless tiny humans being eaten, crushed, or incinerated by dinosaurs, dragons, and giant robots...

those oddball dinosaur cards are cool. are they sportflics type cards?
|
#113
|
||||
|
||||
![]()
Hi Bob -- well, they're maybe alike in only the vaguest sense. We're not that familiar with the Sportflics issues, but from what we can see,
it looks like Sportflics are more akin to the 1970 MLB Promo "hologram" cards from Kellogg cereals -- soft plastic finish over the top of multiple images or something. The Monster Magic Action cards are much more primitive. Unless you have the "Magic Lens" transparent hard plastic slab, the cards just look exactly like what you see in the scans (they're 3.5 x 2.5", by the way, on slightly thinner cardstock than most '60s baseball cards) -- some distinct images with lots of indistinct horizontal lines. When you move the "lens" over the image, the ultra-thin, closely-bunched ribs in the "lens" distort some of those lines on the card, partially obscuring some of the lines while highlighting others, which sort of rearranges the poses and action. Monster eyes roll back and forth, wings and fins flap, puny humans flail helplessly. So in the vaguest sense of how the images "move," they're almost more akin to the Push-Pull cards. Not sure how many different cards were produced -- we've got an even dozen different images. They seem like something that would've come out of Japan originally...

Thanks Mark. I'll do a check on oddball Brooksie stuff next trip to storage. As for the floating heads, nothing really new. I've inspected them a thousand times and I can say that they are all exactly uniform in size. All the lines seem to be professionally(machine) cut. I truly believe that they were issued like that. Hopefully I can confirm that as soon as I find someone else with them.

Adam,
"FINALLY" someone, other than myself, posts something cool of Brooks! It's so funny to me that the majority of the cutouts from newspapers are never cut squarely. Did we not know how to cut w/scissors back in the day?!? |

Adam, very cool piece of ephemera!
One of the Buffalo newspapers did a similar series featuring Bison (International League) players in... must've been 1963, we remember Pumpsie Green being in the set. Clipped 'em and saved 'em as kids, and as kids will, eventually lost 'em at some point. Anybody here ever seen (or have) any of those? Mark: "Did we not know how to cut w/scissors back in the day?!?" That would explain the barbers we went to back then...

I really like the H-O Oatmeal records. Picked one up with the original envelope and order form quite few years back. Nice combination of a color and a b&w image on the front and back. |

I agree on the H-O Oatmeal. I picked up my only one at a National several years back when it just caught my eye on the last day as something that was a perfect buy for leftover cash. Also have the order form but no envelope. Too bad they didn't have a larger player selection though.

Nice Campy, Todd! I am guessing that it was probably a NYC and surrounding area thing, given the Brooklyn address of the company, and the selection of 2 Dodgers, 1 Yank (Allie Reynolds), and 1 Giant (Whitey Lockman). I have seen them listed as 52 or 53, but the envelope is postmarked January of 55, so I am guessing 53 or probably 54 is more likely. I would suspect that the record has them speaking and giving tips, but I have been hesitant to drop a record needle on mine!

I was working at Home Base around the time Jordan was pitching for Rayovac. I have something similar and I think they were stickers. I remember they were inside packages of batteries, but they really weren't cards per se. He was all over the packaging and point of sale displays too.
I have them somewhere, but finding them right now would be a miracle. |

Thanks, that patch is a 1978 Penn Emblem player patch. It's currently at PSA. They grade the set, but have never graded the Yaz.

They do grade the Penn Emblem Patches. The most famous one with the most graded copies is the Pete Rose, which comes in 2 (or 3?) variations. The Yaz isn't part of the master set composite because there are no graded copies. As soon as mine is graded I will have it added to the master composite and send my friend Manny scrambling. He has the #1 Yaz Master.
Ask and ye shall receive. More oddball Yaz: ![]() Pink = pop 4, 1 higher ![]() Green = pop 1, 2 higher ![]() Salmon = pop 2, none higher. I have no idea why the color of this scan is so bad. All the scans of the other matchbooks came out good. Anyway, this really is salmon colored, lol. ![]() Aqua = pop 2, none higher I also have the orange matchbook in PSA 6. There are still 5 colors I want to eventually add to my master set.

Thanks so much for posting the Yaz matchbooks. Those are very nice! Wish Brooks had something like those; that would be a fun search for all of the different colors. The condition you have them in is amazing to me!
