So sad to hear this. Billy Pierce was at least the second best American League Left-Handed pitcher of the 1950's and a good argument could be made for him being the best in MLB during that time if not just the A.L.
This is my opinion based purely on his stats...while I'm glad I'm not old enough to have seen him pitch, or at least to remember it, I do wish I had seen him...nothing more enjoyable to me than watching a great LHP ply his trade. Bless you Mr. Pierce and thanks for the memories or at least the memories your statistical record allow me to imagine as they happened. . .

Being from Chicago and a White Sox fan, I got to meet him a few times. He was one of those rare guys who always seemed like he was more excited to meet you than you were to meet him. Always smiling and in a good mood, he always had time for a conversation and an autograph. A true gentleman and good will ambassador for baseball. A lot of more famous athletes could take a lesson from Billy on how to treat your fans. RIP Mr. Pierce.

I met him years ago at an autograph signing. He was a great guy. He spent more time telling us stories than signing.

we just lost a lot of baseball history. He pitched across the period when baseball was changing on every front. He faced the stars of the 1940's who were transitioning into the '50s and he pitched long enough to last into early 1960's.He was one tough lefty on the mound.Never quite put up HOF statistics but you knew he was going to give his all for you out on the mound.so long,Billy.

I just checked Pierce's career stats - 211 wins, which is not too shabby! But, what really impresses me is 193 complete games (44.6% of the games he started) - times have sure changed in this respect!

You could also throw in the fact of pitching for some not so hot teams. It's hard to say he's a HOF pitcher but then again there's certainly arguments for it.
I'm pulling for Buehrle to pitch another 5-6 years an automatic 10-11 wins a year it will put him around 250-260 and even that may be iffy.
