I don't collect football, so I have no interest in Hernandez or O.J. memorabilia.
But I was happy to get Denny McLain's autograph. His being a convicted felon only made him more interesting. As for Jimmy's joking reference, it was just that: a joke. If you don't find it funny, that's up to you. It may even have been in poor taste to some. But it was mild compared to the things I see on SNL, The Daily Show, or Letterman. If it's not to your taste, change the channel; or in this case, read another thread about a T206 card that's missing a letter.
