That's really neat! I live very close by and know exactly where that ball park once was. The Covington Police Department once boasted Bill McQuerey as a patrolman after his playing days were with Cincinnati, Detroit, Kansas City, Syracuse, and Washington were through. He was killed while chasing a suspect across the suspension bridge across the Ohio River in 1900.
The Kenton County Library has a librarian that writes features for their website and does displays on local baseball. He may be able to help you pinpoint an exact date and get the newspaper stories from it. You can get his contact info from this article: http://www.kentonlibrary.org/2014/ba...-baseball-club |

I would follow Gary's lead and see if you can find out more about this series and the teams. Any negro team broadside has more value. I can't find any immediate google reference to the Colored Lion Tamers, but I assume they were a barnstorming team. Without knowing more I would put value around $150.

Just a quick look, there is record of a team named the Harlan Lion Tamers that played a game v. Lynch Bulldogs in Kentucky, May 1923. "Harlan Lion Tamers, lost to Lynch Bulldogs 12 to 2 in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon. The field was soaked in water and the players waded in mud up to their shoetops in an attempt to play. A home run with the bases full accounted for four runs gathered in one inning." Middlesboro Daily News, May 15, 1923. Here's an interesting African American Schools history in Harlan County, KY: http://nkaa.uky.edu/record.php?note_id=2797
I am not familiar with the area, or if these places are near Covington. Hope this is helpful. Good luck, and great looking broadside! Last edited by pariah1107; 02-18-2015 at 10:28 AM. |
