Spotted this on tonight's episode of Mad Men. Don Draper found it folded under the a/c unit, looked at it briefly, then tossed it aside. Later in the episode, it's tacked up on his office wall.

The Mets is not a studio prop pennant. It's not that uncommon, and I recall seeing that one long before the show Mad Men was even a concept.
If the plot is taking place in the early '60s, I think they actually picked a decent Mets Pennant to portray. Last edited by perezfan; 05-06-2014 at 12:06 AM. |

I actually recently sold a Mets pennant like that on EBay last fall. It didn't have any staining, but it was the exact same one. I sometimes wonder where some of it ends up, but that would have been a little surprising.

the design is very common, but the green color is not. Couldn't go wrong in the rare color and in great condition for 37 bucks.
![]() The seller shipped it flat, but my mail carrier decided to fold it in thirds rather than drop it on our porch. ![]()

How this Cubs fan ended up with an original pennant that flew out by Stan the Man in front of the 2nd Busch Stadium is a long story. Suffice it to say that ego and a charity auction can be a dangerous combination. Not sure how to rotate the picture for here, but the Cards pennant is hanging vertically. I saw a bunch of Cubs pennants, but not these 2.

Here are a few different ones, just to breathe some new life into this thread. Interestingly, the Indians has a real feather inserted into the pennant... |

The Indians one is very cool with the feather. I like that it is an "official" pennant.

I like that Giants one. It appears to be 3/4, but hard to tell. Are you thinking 30's on that one? I have seen similar, but I don't think I have seen that exact version. The real feather Indians is tough to find in nice shape.
|

![]()
Correct on both counts..... NY Giants is 3/4 size and from the '30s. The Yankees and Brooklyn also used that "Ruthian Batter" image at te time, but this is the only one I've seen with color graphics.
Indians is a very soft/supple felt, so I can see how it would be easily prone to damage. But that feather is really anchored in there.... I don't think I could remove it without a pliars! |

I think I have that Yankees version so that would make sense. That version in general is pretty tough as it was kind of that transition period for pennants. I have never seen that green Brooklyn Dodgers one you posted either. That's a nice one too.
BTW, it really seems like pennants are not getting the respect or collectibility that they were only a couple of years ago. I see tough versions of a lot of pennants barely selling for much of a premium over the run of the mill styles. You still see some of those spikes here and there, but it's a little disheartening. I think pennants are great and I am always shocked when vintage collectors do not include them in their collections. I guess we'll just have to keep this thread going to help it along. Jason |

Here are a few I found at Brimfield, a flea market, and a card show over the past few months. The Tigers one looks like the championship year one but the tip is cut out (presumably to sell it in subsequent years?).
I am amazed by the early pennants shown in this thread! Alan |

The same price drop has happened with vintage gloves and bats as well. There was a time when any split finger glove would bring at least 25.00-30.00. Now you can sometimes buy them for as little as 10.00. Store bought bats as well. Rising shipping costs have not helped either.

Too true. Reminds me of my early days on Ebay, when one could see and contact easily all those that were underbiddders on one's own auction items to offer deals outside of the Ebay parameters. The city of Toronto (my home town...pls no Rob Ford jokes...we have suffered enough) was vying for an Olympic bid and had produced official pins in advance of the vote. I was the first in line and purchased 50 (the limit) at city hall and out the hem up right away. I had them all sold through one listing and at a great profit before the vote came back, not in our favour.

Between work nightmares and 3 family members being hospitalized, it's been a unique couple of months (that I do not recommend ![]() ![]() Anyway, you have first crack at this one. It's in very nice shape, with only 2 pin holes and no other flaws. Pretty rare variation, and nice bright colors. I took the pics at twilight with no flash, so the color is far better in person. I will PM you with the price... sorry again for the long delay! Mark |

Two things I love about vintage pennants are...
* Oddball Mascots * Felt colors that have no relation to the team colors They're so different from the generic and sterilized images you see today. Just a ton more artistry and charm back then. Below are some examples of seldom-seen team logos and mascots... 1. New York Giants - Does this Goof represent Baseball or Football? 2. Brooklyn Dodgers - I love how they "crowned" the Clown when they finally won it. 3. 1960 Pirates - This unsavory fellow made a very brief appearance on Pirates Pennants 4. Boston Braves - A one-time appearance for this guy (very rare one!) 5. Cincinnati Reds - They used a "Native American" for maybe a year or two... not sure why... Red Skin? 6. NY Yankees - Looks like they used The Mick's image for this one. But I doubt the Commerce Comet was ever compensated. Just wanted to give this thread a kick in the pants... let's see some more oddball stuff! |

Here's a pair that doesn't surface often... Took me forever to find these, let alone in good condition. There is also a matching Yankees version, which I have seen only once in 20+ years
Same artist and company. These are "a cut above" IMO, as the felt is thicker and the tassels are longer than normal. Must have been made by an obscure company, which might explain the scarcity. Any thoughts on these, Rob? ![]() I know you must own both, and eager to hear your perspective ![]() |

like green and yellow (A's colors) or blue and yellow? these pennants are butt ugly...yes, I guess it's a giant but the only giant that should be used is the Willard Mullin "Giant on bridge" (or Giant in Polo Grounds).

Fascinating subject. I had no idea there was so much variety in pennants. Maybe it's because the only ones I ever run across are the common, newer ones, that show up at flea markets and such. I don't really collect them but I will pick them up if they are interesting, and cheap.
Here are 2 of my favorites: As a RAMS fan, this one was a must have, even though it looks pretty faded. Team picture is the 1960 RAMS squad. ![]() This Dodgers pennant I can't see to find any information on, such as date. I've been told it dates to the 1950's. But they had just arrived in Los Angeles in 1958, so that is just a 2 year window. Not sure. I just loved the graphic of the sliding player, who actually looks quite a bit older than 1950's. ![]()
