Loved watching him pilot the 89 Cubs to a division title. RIP Popeye!

If you're interested, see my blog post here on my amazing and unique Zimmer story--I saw his last, in the minors, when he activated himself as player, and he hit it off Jim Palmer (and Earl Weaver told me this is all true).

Got this auto at the "Cubs Caravan" in Indianapolis somewhere in the 1989-1990 time frame. We'll miss you Zim!

A few months ago I knocked out this feature on the gerbil (Said lovingly). In reality, Zim belongs in the Buck O'Neil BB HOF lifers wing.

Big +1. Put Max Patkin in that wing as well!

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Strive to be happy.

Sad, sad day for me, as I was a big Zimmer fan ever since he managed the 1988 Cubs.

If you haven't seen my Don Zimmer collection check it out here, probably the world's most complete Zimmer collection.

Collecting Zim: http://www.baseballcardstars.com/zimfiles/index.html

Here's his signed 1948 High School Yearbook

Couple of his toughest vintage cards...

52 Victoria

58 Bell Brand

58 Hires

59 Morrell Meats

60 Topps Advertising Panel

62 Bazooka

62 Jello

I was in the RF bleachers for about 35-40 games that year, "The Boys of Zimmer". I enjoyed his unconventional style. RIP to a baseball lifer who goes way back. What a great life to spend it all in baseball.

I was in left field for a few of those games. Every play he put on that season worked like a charm. Watching Mitch Williams in the 9th put a few more wrinkles on that magnificent face!
