A Cubs pennant is currently on Ebay. Although there are no photos of the reverse, the owner informed me there is a label on the back which says "The Reproduction Company". Anyone have any information about this pennant being reproduced? It is receiving bids as if it were original. Would appreciate comments from pennant guys. Thanks.

You're not going to get much of a response on here until after the auction. I am sure all in the "pennant know" are very aware of this pennant and actively watching. Just my two cents for info

A google search for "the reproduction company pennant" will give you a link to a NY history museum. Looks to me like they made pennants 100+ years ago.

The Reproduction Company has been around for a hundred years or so. I am no pennant expert but I do have a couple of high school pennants made by them that are vintage (ca. 1910). No reason to make a fake high school pennant as it would not be very valuable. The Chicago pennant may well be good.

OK, I hear you all loud and clear. The last one I remember like this had a label from A.G. Spalding, so I was just a little concerned.

Mark S. (Perezfan) has this same pennant. What does yours say on the back Marko? I just sent him a text to check out the thread.

Not sure about the exact tagging on the reverse of my Oversized Cubs, but there's definitely one there. I'm not going to unframe it to see what it says... just too much hassle.
But as others stated above, The Reproduction Company definitely was a leading Pennant maker in the 1910s. I have two unquestionably authentic Pennants with this tag... Connie Mack's Athletics (Ringmaster) Frank Chance's Cubs I've also seen it on early/oversized High School and College Pennants with little value, as "bigtrain" stated above. Reproduction, at the time, likely meant the company simply reproduced logos and images onto Felt and other surfaces. IMO, the tag is completely legit with no cause for concern. Hope this helps clarify. Last edited by perezfan; 03-03-2014 at 07:37 PM. |

Put in a few bids, but wasn't willing to surpass the 3K mark. That being said, the buyer probably got a good deal. Congrats to the winner.

the seller told me he heard that the pennant was worth $5-6K.
So maybe he was surprised. But not pleasantly. |

For more on "The Reproduction Company" and printing onto felt pennants... Read towards the bottom of page 434. This book has been digitized, and is from 1913...

In a response to a question of mine, the owner referred to the defect as a water stain; after asking (twice) if it went through to the back and if he could please take a picture, I never heard back from him. That's what scared me away.

Yup.. The info is all at our fingertips (almost...)
Seller was not world-class. The description was awful, there were no "key words" in the title, and there was no reference to the importance of the pennant. Plus, the seller was non-responsive and provided crappy photos. I would not be surprised to see this one make a repeat appearance in REA or Heritage... at double the price. I could see the faint water stain under the white "smudge".... but all things considered, the condition looked pretty good. Most from this era are destroyed by moths, or have rips, tears, holes, fading, etc. My gosh... promote and sell the damn thing a little! it's from the Tinker/Evers/Chance era, for Pete's sake. I know she found it in her parents' basement, but you've got to make some sort of effort ![]() |
