There are a lot of casual collectors, as opposed to those hopelessly addicted to the monster, who don't have a clue as to scarce backs. There really is no accurate price guide, in book form or online, from which such a buyer could educate himself. Look at T206.org and you'll get a price of a few hundred bucks. Look at the SCD Vintage catalog and the card is worth maybe $100 times a multiplier of 10 to 15x for the back. SMR says its a $75 card in good condition. You really have to know past auction prices to know the value of Dan's card. Most casual collectors will not do that much research.

Tom, true!
But the guy offered Dan 5% of what the card was listed for.
W/ such a disparity, he should have researched the value prior to making the offer.
Does anyone expect any seller to discount a lot at 95% off their asking price?

I'm not sure why people are defending this clown. You wouldn't walk into the National and offer a dealer $300 on $7500 price tag, why is it ok on eBay? I'm also not buying the "stupid collector" theory, if he didn't know about backs (which is impossible at this point) then why is he interested in paying $300 for a $100 front. I personally think he was just being a d!ck.

I'll take Dan over almost anyone in this forum. He's honest and he doesn't suffer fools. And none of his cards are seriously undergraded.

And I'm not sure why people are defending Dan's behavior. Let's use your example for a minute. Let's say that same buyer walked up to Dan at the National and offered him $300 on his card priced $7500. Do you honestly think Dan would have responded the same? Do you think he would have called a customer at his table an "idiot" and a "dumbshit" and told him to do his homework? Or do you think the situation would have been handled a little different in person? So, I'll ask you the same question. Why is it ok on eBay?

Idk, I haven't met Dan at a show yet so I'll try and see what happens.

I've listed BINs with best offer before, so I've experienced the extreme low-balling phenomena that only seems to exist on eBay. I just let it slide and write it off as annoying... But Dan actually calling one of these guys out publicly was pretty funny to me.

I can pretty much assure you it would go down the same way.

there are 20 million dollar domain listings you can purchase for 10 bucks....especially in the porn business. many people all day post rediculous prices for their stuff.

the arguments for and against are cut and dry. the only thing this thread is doing is keeping this ridiculous conversation about how dan may or may not be a dick alive.

stop humoring his ridiculous threads and his attitude will stop. he clearly needs the attention.

But they will think that a seller who has a card listed for $7,500 will accept $300? I can understand Dan's reaction. I don't generally make offers of less than 50% of the seller's asking price. Sure, the item may be only worth 30%, but I assume the seller has a value in mind that's too high for me and I am not going to waste our collective energy.
