In his seasons with 600 or more plate appearances, Musial's strikeout totals were: 40, 39, 39, 39, 38, 36, 34, 32, 31, 29, 28, 24 and 18. Musial finished his career with more doubles (725) than strikeouts (699).

I was never able to see Stan Musial play in person. While I was growing up in Southern California my dad regularly listened to the Dodgers on the radio. In 1963 Stan Musial was being honored in every National League ballpark during his final season. I was in bed, it must have been a school night. I can still hear Vin Scully's voice paying homage to "the great Stan Musial", with the accompanying loud, long applause. My dad was listening to the game in the den, and assumed I was asleep. All these years later I can still hear Vin Scully's voice praising Stan Musial...........and the long applause.
Something from the local newspaper today: "President John F. Kennedy, at the 1962 All-Star Game, to a 41-year-old Stan Musial": "A couple years ago they told me I was too young to be president and you were too old to be playing baseball. But.....we fooled them."" R.I.P. Stan Musial |

To me his most impressive feat was not the hits, hrs or avg, it was his marriage of 71 years that truly AMAZES me. Also, by all accounts Stan was a better person than ball player.....simply amazing.

I got to meet him once. He was a real gentleman and friendly to everyone. He was truly the "Mickey Mantle" of the midwest. His cards would be much more expensive if he had played for one of the New York teams. Here's a few of his cards I've found over the years.

WOW ! .....the STATS on the back of this 1953 BOWMAN card of Stan show a .352 career BA for his first 11 years with the Cardinals.
TRIVIA quiz A well-known BB player was born on the same day (years later) as Stan Musial and in the same town in Pennsylvania. Who is he ? ![]() TED Z |

What a great photo, Ross. Thanks for posting. Stan was a great man even if he had never played major league ball.
