A nearly contemporary (Oct. 24, 1912) article in The Sporting News reported that one of the Pittsbutgh beat writers was contracted to obtain signed player releases for an unnamed cigarette company. Said he was "paid handsomely" for the job. Wagner opted out but gave the sportswriter $50 so he wouldn't lose his commission on the deal. |
