Jim Rice was born on this date in 1953, in Anderson, South Carolina.
He signed his first professional contract with the Boston Red Sox and made his MLB debut in 1974. During his playing career, Rice quickly became one of the most feared hitters in the league. He was an eight-time All-Star and won the American League (AL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 1978. Notably, Rice led the AL in home runs three times and in RBIs twice. All this culminating in his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009. After retiring, Rice has done some coaching and been a commentator for Red Sox pre-game and post-game shows for NESN.
