I have a hard time giving regionals enough weight to warrant a rookie designation.
But for me, it has and always is the first nationally accessible card from a licensed card company, regardless of ‘perceived’ rarity. So a Topps or a Fleer or a Bowman first issued card will be that persons true rookie card. It is possible for a player to have multiple rookie cards too. A player shows up for the first time in multiple base sets or multiple rookie/traded/update sets. These would all be rookie cards IMHO. If they show up in the base set first and then again in a traded/rookie/update set of that same company in the same year, the base card is their true rookie card. I would also consider licensed verses unlicensed as well. So if a company put out a newer rookie card and they were not licensed with the respective league, that card is a bootleg to me and holds no value or credence of any sort. This strictly deals with newer, modern cards 50’s and later. 60 Yaz, 84 Puckett, 93 Jeter, 11 Trout and 84 Jordan are my selections as well. My .02 cents.
