This article from today's NY Times is long, yes, and starts out a bit dry BUT it is well worth reading until the end. If nothing else, please check out the incredible photos. The one that blew me away is toward the beginning of the piece. It's a shot of Hank Aaron as an 18-year-old in front of a train station, heading to start play for the Indy Clowns. Like, wow. There are other great Negro League photos in this piece too. Check them out. At the end of the piece you get some eye-opening (disturbing?) comments from Commissioner Landis about integration in baseball. Well worth digesting, IMHO. |
