I don't know exactly when, but there was a law that was either new or that became prominent around 1989 that essentially banned tobacco advertising on anything marketed primarily to kids.
So the Logos had to be removed from cards, which wasn't a huge problem. For the diecast nascar fans though.. It was a pretty big deal. many of the racing champions cars could have the sponsors logo, sort of like having all the team logos airbrushed off a card.
