It sure looks like it could be used for that to me. The spring on this one works perfectly in the back. While researching the item before purchasing it, I came upon a Net54 thread from 2014 where you discuss it being a potato chip clip as well:

Also, thank you for the kind words about the 1972 Candy Lid Brooks. It's one of my favorites. And also my wife is one of my favorites for letting me spend that money to get a PSA 8.
