My take on this hobby is that it's not an investment - do it for fun, buy what you enjoy, and spend what you feel comfortable owning something for.
that said - if I were to approach it like investing, this would be one of those things where dollar cost averaging makes a WHOLE LOT OF SENSE. Buy consistently; over a long enough period of time, and what you overpaid for in a bubble will be more than made up for by what you got a "bargain" on in all other periods.
