Well, the local Target finally got the new Panini football cards. So, I bought two 8 pack boxes (one box of Classics and one box of Prestige) to check them out. First off, I like the designs of both, but I especially like the Prestige. They actually kind of remind me of the Fleer Ultra cards from the 1990's, which isn't a bad thing. The set is 200 base cards and 100 rookies in Prestige, and 100 base, 100 legends, and 100 rookies in Classics.
My Prestige box netted quite a bit of star power: Kuechly, Gates, Rivers, Mariotta, Romo, Bryant, Brady, and many more. The box said I should average 8 rookies. That's what I got. The premier one for me was Carson Wentz. I also got four rookie cards that were special cards. One was a "Passport" card for Jayron Kearse. Another was a "Big Board" card of Jeremy Cash. Another was a blue glossy embossed NFL Draft card of Vonn Bell. And the fourth was an "Xtra Points" rookie card of Joey Bosa that is super glossy and has red lettering. I'm not sure how tough any of these are to pull, but I got em. I'd love to collect this set, but at one rookie per pack average, it will be a bit pricey. I may have to trade some of the inserts for rookies to pull it off. I also got 8 rookies in my Classics box. None of the big names here, but Derrick Henry, Will Fuller, and Michael Thomas were there. These are not as nice in my opinion. To me they look like a cross between 1960 Fleer and 1983 Topps. I did get several inserts: Classic Clashes (Rodger/Roethlisberger), Next Level (Marshall Faulk), Monday Night Heroes (Leveon Bell), Team Tributes (Pittsburgh Steelers), Record Breakers Larry Fitzgerald, Future Legends Amari Cooper. At least I think they are inserts... I also got two blue back parallels: Doug Williams and Herman Edwards. As far as star power, well, the whole set is mostly stars. I got Brady, Newton, Gronkowski, Brees, Rodgers, Foster, Edelman, Beckham, Roethlisberger, Julio Jones, Romo, and a bunch of legends of the past, many of whom are HOFers. I like the legends, but I don't know if I'll keep working on this or not. The design is not as nice in my opinion (although certainly not bad), and again, with those rookies being so tough to get, I'll get all the great cards and be chasing guys that got cut in training camp. But, who knows? Anybody else going after these cards?
