Phil,
I'm sorry that you lost some money while collecting but hopefully you were entertained and learned something from the experience. I don't want to offer any platitudes or try to rub salt in your wound but your story validates both Carl's and Jeff's points posted above. Again, sorry things turned out negatively for you.
