So I picked up these 3 snapshots, from JManos(Thanks Jim!). I got them because they picture Lou Gehrig. One is at bat. One pictures him at first. The third is a group shot with all the players milling around(I am assuming warm up/BP). I've included the whole pictures and higher res close ups of the players and the scoreboard.
What I need is a little help with is setting the scene. 1) I noticed right off the bat is that they have no numbers. This should set it the date prior to 1929. I can't tell if the front of the jerseys read "New York" or "Yankees," so that doesn't help with dates. Anyone see any other clues to dating them? 2) The player at first and at both physically appear to be Gehrig. Agree/Disagree? 3) The group photo appears to be the opposing team, not the Yanks.(Gehrig isn't in this photo) The logo on the front looks like it could be Cleveland, but I'm not sure. Is it Cleve? If not, then who? Does anyone see any other recognizable players in any of the photos? 4) There are no decorations at the park, so I doubt this would be a WS game or similar. Any ideas about which park this is? I also note that many of the players and fans seem to be wearing long sleeves. Possibly a game in the March/April? 5) The scoreboard also raises 2 questions. The scoreboard is in the photo with Gehrig fielding. First, on the right side of the scoreboard, I see the team names listed for the other games. to the left of the names there are 2 columns labelled "P" and "C". I assume these mean pitcher and catcher with numbers listed below. Also where it says "Batter" the number 16 is below it. So, if prior to 1929, the players didn't have numbers, what do the numbers mean? Second question is that the last pairing listed appears to be New York and below it St Louis. I assume this would be the Browns, but the logo of the opposing team looks like a capital "C". Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Mark Thanks again Jim. I am very happy. They got here really quickly. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
