I don't know what it means, but my opening day April 16, 1940 scorecard has an "A".
I have no others from 1940, and the ones I have from 1941 & 1943 have no such lettering. Edited to add : Yes, I think my scanner cut off the bottom of the cover, I need to take a look to confirm, but my early 1940's box is buried kind of deep.
