I picked up this wool Giants ushers jacket a few months ago. It's not really up my alley (see my User Name), but I couldn't pass it by.
You just don't see them that often, and I thought the price was right. I bought it from someone on the West coast. He told me it was an usherette jacket from Candlestick Park, but he did not know the person who wore it to do their job. He didn't know anything else about it really. So as far as provenance is concerned, there is none. The manufacturer's label says Saxony Clothes 925 Bway New York (no zip code), as you can see in the pictures below. The logo style, the mfg label, and the opinion of a prominent SF Giants collector made me think that this could be from the teams days at the Polo Grounds. A possible scenario I came up with is that it probably did duty at the Polo Grounds, Seals Stadium and Candlestick Park. Judging by the fact that they put an Usher number, instead of a name on the label, I assume these were property of the team, not the individual. The move to San Francisco I'm sure was very costly. Team owners being as frugal as they were back in the day would look for every opportunity to save money on the related expenses. Why spend money on all new Usher and vendor uniforms? So, I theorize that this jacket made the move west with the team. It's funny when you think about how this would have influenced their hiring decisions. "Sorry buddy, but we just don't have any more size 42's left!" It's all pure speculation on my part of course; but it's very plausible and makes an interesting story! I tried to find information about it online - Did Saxony actually make Giants Ushers jackets? If so, what years? Are there any photos out there of Ushers wearing this style jacket at any of those stadiums? I did not have any luck. It's likely that some knowledgeable N54'er could add or detract from my theory with some actual facts. If so, please do, but try not to make me feel too stupid. I wanted to do more research before I offered it for sale, but something came up today - an opportunity to buy a Yankee Stadium seat, flat-slats style - and I would love to raise some money towards that purchase. It's in excellent condition. I can send more pictures to anyone who is interested. I am asking $395, plus postage and (optional) insurance. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Please PM if interested. ![]() NOTE: One button - middle left in this picture - is a vintage replacement.
