Why though? Who were the monster free agents they signed? Jimmy Key? Darryl? Hideki Irabu and David Wells?
The Yankees traded for David Cone, Roger Clemens, Paul O'Neill, Tino Martinez, and Scott Brosius. They had three home grown positional players at premium positions, shortstop, catcher and centerfield, and then had two more home grown players as their postseason ace and the best relief pitcher who ever lived. If you want to say the Yankees bought one single championship in 2009, I might agree with you.
