This is an interesting thought on modern collecting. There was a long time in which leaving a box or packs aside, unopened, was no big deal to the rest of the collecting public. I mean with millions of cards issued each year, even from the more scarce products left unopened, there are plenty of examples of all singles available to obtain.
Now in the era of inserts, there are scarce numbered cards (down to single copies) that may never see the light of day along with redemptions & codes that go unredeemed and will eventually expire. It makes little sense (to me, at least) to keep unopened boxes of newer cards from that perspective. I assume most of the unopened new product is speculation/gambling, hoping that the chance of something good (auto, 1/1, etc) or a top condition card to have graded lurks inside and drives the prices.
