I heard Tony Gwynn tell the story that when Rickey Henderson had recently joined the Padres, he walked onto the team bus and looked around for a seat. He says to anyone that can hear, "Where's Rickey going to sit?" Steve Finley responds to Rickey, "Rickey, you can sit anywhere you want...you have tenure." In vintage Rickey fashion, he replies, "Tenure, man, Rickey got 15 year"
To hear Tony Gwynn tell it was great since he could barely get through the story without cracking up. I was never a huge Henderson fan until I heard his HOF speech and came to realize how much he absolutely loved the game of baseball. What a great character! Mark |
