1960 & 1962 SPORT HOBBYIST's....Lionel Carter article, Frank Nagy's Wagner, etc.

While rummaging thru my archives I came across this 1962 Nov-Dec issue of The Sport Hobbyist Magazine. I will post more of the articles in it later.

I started with Frank Nagy's article obout his Wagner. Note that Frank says there are 522 cards in the T206 set ! ?

Ted - I do not think that he considered the Magie card as part of the set at the time since it was an "error" and not an intended variation.

I agree with you. So, does this tell us that you could acquire a Magie in 1962 for the same cost as a common ?

No, I do not think that the Magie was ever considered a common common card. I think that it always sold at a hefty premium. It was just not considered an official part of the set by some. Kind of the same way that some people look at the T205 "errors" - many people consider their T205 set complete at 208.

Maybe the other card besides the Magie is the Doyle Nat'l. It wasn't really known about until Fritz (sp) advertised he was buying all Doyles. I think that was after 62? That would make 524 for the set. Great article. Thanks Ted.

Thanks Joe,

The T206 Joe Doyle Nat'l card was not....and WAS....known by the early 1980's. When Larry Fritsch apparently was the first in the modern era of the hobby to discover
this rare error card, there was at least one other such Joe Doyle card in existence.

I say "WAS known"....because Georgia Senator Richard Russell had one in his childhood collection. Russell passed away in 1971; and circa 1980, his 1000+ Tobacco card
collection was placed in a museum at the Univ. of Georgia (where it has been on display). His T206 set also includes a Ty Cobb/Ty Cobb card. No Wagner or Plank.

I finally got back to my office and had a chance to look at my framed Nagy's
and was surprised to see that all but one were graded authentic.
It didn't seem to matter much---just 3 here-- an e90-1 roy thomas aut, e90
schlitzer Aut, and an sgc 60 goudey '33 of mccurdy; then, i noticed that your cards and jay's are authentics. I think we mentioned something akin to this aeons ago but am wondering if the Nagy's are often authentic. Obviously, I'm not forgetting the exceptionality(two meanings?) of Jim's beauties.

Many of the E90's in Frank's collection appear to have been altered (trimmed ?).
My Duffy, Speaker and Tinker in Post #14 were also graded AUTH. (before I cracked them out of their SGC plastics).

As you know, a lot of these E90's were oversized and perhaps this is why they were cut down.

Other card issues that I've acquired from Frank over the years (Goudey's, Diamond Stars, Play Ball's) have not been altered.

I draw your attention to the adv. by Bill White. I've known Bill since I returned to this hobby in the 1970's. Bill is one of those unusual guys
who have continuously kept up with collecting sportscards and sports memorabilia since his youth. Bill is one of the greatest guys I've met
in this hobby. His expertise with pre-war and post-war sportscards card sets is amazing.

I met Frank Nagy in 1972 in Detroit, at the Second Annual Midwest Card Collectors' Convention. When I told him that I was a Pirates fan and that I collected T206's, he told me that he happened to own a Wagner. Laughing, he also told me that earlier that day someone had offered to trade him a station wagon for his T206 Wagner. I think he or someone else said they thought that it might cost as much as $5000 to obtain a T206 Wagner.

I can relate to Frank's story here. Since at an very young age, I got my two daughters interested in Baseball. In the summertime we would catch several Yankees games at
the Stadium. They got the most enjoyment being at the Old Timer's game, since they got to see the players from my youth that I had told them of. Especially, when Mickey
Mantle hit a HR (Summer of '73).
When they were in their teens, they started collecting BB cards and Non-Sports cards. They motivated me to get back into the hobby (circa 1977).

great piece from Nagy and your own personal story.
I was surprised that he liked the R cards so much but pleased since I have spent the last couple of years trying to complete the R cards in ACC(through 1939) and am 3
away now. I realized that I shouldn't have been surprised since the R cards were his boyhood favs, much like the late fifties to mid-sixties were my boyhood favs.
Great to be reminded in your own story about the old timers games.
Gratefully, I was able to see Dimaggio in a game decades ago and got to see him cross home!

Ive been up for almost 24 hours and im way to tired to do the math

but this magazine back then was $0.25, lets say the average cost of a magazine today is about $7 bucks, so then what would $250 bucks back then be equal to today assuming that $0.25=$7.00 now???

I thought some might enjoy seeing this old Hobby Publication. I love collecting the very first of the publications. This predates most of us but I am sure a few of our members remember it. Cute story about Lefty Grove too....enjoy...
