Should I do a "Handbook to US Early Candy and Gum Baseball Issues?"

Many hobbyists know of the Handbook to US Early Candy and Gum Baseball Issues, 1969. Here is the author, Richard Egan, contemplating it with Buck Barker.....

If you are referring to posting one, sure. If you are referring to reprinting it and offering it to us candy collectors, I SAY ABSOLUTELY!!! I have been trying to buy an original for a LONG time, but to no avail. A VERY generous board member here sold me a copy for the price of postage, but still looking for the elusive original!!

I am not really referring to anything. I was making a play on the title as Richard Egan was only contemplating doing the handbook at this point in time. I thought folks would find a 45 yr old, important hobby correspondence to be interesting. I have an early original and a copy. I have never seen another original for sale though I am sure there have been many. Sorry if I was confusing in my title. It was only a play on words. take care

Great document Leon...you can really peek into the beginnings of our hobby as it exists today (with the emphasis on baseball/sports issues) as opposed to Burdick's efforts to include practically all paper ephemera in his catalogs/research. It seems like Egan was responding to a need amongst collectors to have more specialized and detailed listings, as well as understanding the collector's desire to have example photographs of each issue, just like in our modern guides. Thanks for sharing!

Hang on for a few minutes, guys. Let me work on a thread with a Poll Question, "Should Leon revise and reissue a guide to early candy and gum cards?" I think he should, but we should have a Poll... And whatever he publishes MUST have an image of his quarter on there!!!

Bob Lemke (hi Bob) has done/did a fantastic job with the Baseball Krause SCD for many years. There is no way in heck I would want to undertake a new work like that. The one thing I might do before I start pushing up daisies is a detailed article on the making of the ACC. That in itself will be a huge undertaking. As for the quarter.....we'll see .
