I attended a very cool original estate find auction Saturday July 16th of single owner 1930s gum cards. The cards were found in a 90 year old gentleman's house who passed away. The cards were found in paper sandwich bags I believe.
It was an amazing collection, displayed on the auction tables and the baseball cards were absolute blazers!! They looked pack fresh in many cases. My dad, who will be 90 in November and collected during this era always told me that the Indian cards were way more popular than the baseball to the kids. He told me he used to trade baseball to get Indians he needed. Way cool! Now for the funny part, I am standing next to 3 guys probably in their 30s and listening to them. They were discussing how the cards were trimmed and that the owner must have bought them in the 1980s before the fabulous 3rd party grading was around. ok I don't see a face puking so no font here. Not a single card was trimmed, it was so obvious that this was an original childhood collection that I just had to laugh. I love competition like that at auctions. The amazing part, the baseball cards were in blazing condition but... the Indians were VG and showed the most wear!! How neat! Just like Pops told me. The Tootsie Circus cards were gorgeous and brough double what I expected The nicest Ruth brought $4K raw I was fortunate enough to get a few things but it was really enjoyable seeing a FRESH to the hobby collection like that being offered raw. The auction was in York PA and can be easily found on auction zip. Thanks for reading Dan Mckee. |

I was at an auction a few weeks back that had 1950-60s Topps baseball that had never been in a hobbyists hands...the large majority of them appeared to be pack fresh. One guy told me he was sure the cards were trimmed...of course I agreed with him only because I wanted him to not bid. The cards went really high...the only one I managed to snag was a 1959 Clemente. I really should have gone after a few of the lots of commons though as there were four shoeboxes that had about 100-200 1960 and 1964 Topps..they went cheap at around $150 each, but who knows if the guy who won them would have stopped bidding.

Yes smart thought process there agreeing they were trimmed! Nice Clemente for sure.
I am 1/3 owner of the nice Ruth and 1/2 owner of the 20 nice tootsie circus cards. I also picked up both Bengough's, and a full run of jungle gum low numbers. I lost some neat Indian candy box cards that I had never seen before. Dan. |

How do you own a third of a card? Do you get to have the card in your possession for 4 months out of the year?

There were delongs but I didn't get any as I already have that set completed.
1/3rd of the card is simple. We get it graded (puke) and then we sell it for more than it is worth based on what some youngin puts on a label. Then we split the profit 3 ways Its magic! ![]() |

Great story. I recently picked up a super fresh collection of Topps sets that were purchased circa 1980. It is amazing how the cards even feel different when they have hardly ever been touched.
I understand the need for grading, but I hope that collectors of graded cards also get the change to touch and feel actual cards, especially when they are from fresh collections... |
