Figured I would get the May thread started. I just got home from my day of treasure hunting out in Adamstown PA, and overall I was happy with the day.
The first item I picked up is a very early Spalding Table Tennis set, with a beautifully decorated lithography box lid (The box looks alot better in person than my iphone could capture). The set has all of its pieces, including 2 neat ping pong paddles that have the Spalding mark embossed onto the silver metal portion. After some quick online research, I believe this set could date to 1896 and seems pretty rare. Next, I picked up this massive display bat that is made of several different pieces of wood. The seller told me they believe it was a store display piece. It is a huge bat, measuring about 42 inches, and weighs 83 oz. Lastly I picked up a small 19th century figure 8 ball that is missing leather in some areas, and a Jos. Zacko Sporting Goods brand baseball bat. The reason I picked up the Zacko bat, is Zacko was very involved with the Pottsville Maroons, supplying the team with all of its equipment, selling tickets out of his sporting goods store, and was a Maroons super-fan of sorts. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Glad to check this piece off my Tommy Bridges wish list. Not in working condition though so I still have my eyes open for a complete working game. The color of this one is amazing though.

I collect various tickets stubs. One set I am looking to complete is 4 homeruns in one game. Was able to win this unused season ticket from Mark Whitens 4 homerun game in 1993. Not always easy to find, even for a newer ticket.

Has anyone ever seen one of these? I bought it from someone in Australia - he thinks it is from the states. That sure could be - but maybe England? Anything? Either way - I'm happy to own it.

Went to an estate sale this morning and saw this little pinback peeking out of a box right at me...it's not marked as a Lincoln Chiefs pinback, but I knew it was the second I saw it because the little baseball guy was used by the Chiefs.

Maybe they are just generic? I've not seen one before..perhaps a lot of minor league clubs used that same little baseball dude logo?

Picked up this neat looking 1941 Chicago Cubs schedule on the 'bay. It's pretty thin paper, almost like a decal with a fierce Cubs graphic!

Just got this tonight. I am not 100% sure if it is LSU until I do some research on it. The building in the background looks like a building that was on the old campus, and the lady is carrying a purple and gold pennant(they put ladies like this on the inside of the yearbooks as well).
I risked the money, but I believe it is LSU ![]()

Very rare 1986 McGwire game used autographed bat. He came up in August of '86 so not many gamers around. Rawlings/Adirondak last year for this label. Knob has year code on it. Shows awesome use. Maybe one of his first 3 homeruns on it??? I've been after this one for a while.

Thanks to Travis Wise for a great transaction....
I am efforting to become a no-wallet guy. I have found that my aging behind is large enough without a billfold in my back pocket. I wanted a distinct money clip and Travis helped me find one that really fit the bill. It is a premium that was given to members of the 1959 California League All Star team. This one belonged to Nolan Campbell, a utility infielder who played 12 years in the minors who also became a manager. Mr. Campbell holds the distinction to be the first manager to be thrown out of a professional baseball game by a female umpire. He played all nine positions on the field in a single game twice in his career. He was born in Weedpatch, Cali, which is also pretty cool. Cost me $30 which I think is a bargain. ![]() |

Picked up this large (30" x 24") store advertising display at an estate sale today. I've seen the smaller 8x10 premiums, but never one this large. This appears to be intended for store display, as there is an Independence, Mo hardware stamp in the lower left corner. It is on hard backing. I thought it was a pretty neat item.

Picked up an interesting group of items this week:
-1960, (first season at Candlestick) SF Giants schedule put out by the distillers of Cyrus Noble bourbon -34" Burke Hanna "Grand Prize" bat. Can anyone tell me the approx era of this bat and possibly the significance to the "Grand Prize" label (marketing slogan?) -a July 18, 1898 scored, baseball game scorecard played between two "Canadian League" teams (I am unsure if this is the correct league identifyer as web reasearch indicates that it may be an ressurrection of the older International league?) - the London Cockneys and the Hamilton Hams. London players include "Kid" Mohler, Sam LaRocque, Pete Lohman etc. This team appears to be the first stop in Moose Grimshaw's career, as Baseball ref.com lists him appearing in 4 games in London and while his name isn't on the pre-printed line up portion of the card, the fan who owned this card has pencilled in what appears to be full roster of the London team on the back and it includes Grimshaw. Sorry about the poor picture quality, I will scan this scorecard and repost this weekend for those interested (it is carefully scored) . Hamiton players include - Bunk Congalton, Marr Phillips etc. ![]() ![]()

I completely lucked into this pickup...well, not really..it was an easy pickup (99 cents on ebay), but I didn't realize it had baseball significance until just tonight when I was researching the former mayor of Lincoln. Frank Zehrung was the president of the Western League 1916-17 at which time Lincoln was a member so this autograph fits nicely into my collection.

Nice pick up Dan B. Always nice to find a gem like that.
Awesome score oldtix on the WS programs. Was able to pick up 3 nice Wichita Indians items. A 1951 Indians player, a 1953 Indians team photo and an autographed 1953 team signed ball. Ball not pictured.

Seriously...as Lefty Gomez said, "I'd rather be lucky than good." I was astounded to see the programs in the booth of a magazine dealer. He told me he had just found them in a large group of magazines and that this was the first time he had taken them to a show. I simply cannot explain my luck; the prices were expensive for magazines...but a bargain for Series programs! Anyone reading this post would have pounced on them; I can't understand why no one else did...it was a no-brainer. So far this year, it seems there's more quality memorabilia showing up at antique shows, malls and shops. Believe it or not, the Series programs weren't even the best find of the day! This being a sports board, the other stuff wouldn't be of much interest here...but the trend is definite and it's an exciting time to be on the prowl for great stuff! Thanks Steve. The ink smears were there when I got it and I have it positioned so it's resting on the laces, not the sig. It's unfortunate that Ted signed there, but for maximum viewing pleasure, his sig ends up on the bottom.
Thanks for the concern. ![]() |

Was able to pick up a circa 1950 Hank Sauer game used bat. The bat is 36 inches in length--is an H4 model and currently weighs 36.3 oz. The bat was given in person to a young boy many years ago by non other than former Cardinal player Ray Blades who was a friend of the family. Also acquired was a vintage Stan Musial Hartland statue as well as a 1963 Cardinals program/ticket stub to Stan Musials last game.
I plan on adding the bat to my collection but people are welcome to email me with any offers on the other items as they are not things I collect and will be sold down the road. Thanks. sicollector1954@comcast.net |
