If you're considering color variations you probably need to also include the Old Mill brown as one of the toughest. Certainly the Ty Cobb is up for debate as well -- some consider it part of T206 whereas others think it's a one card set (or special print series).

For my basic set (15 companies...no Cobb), I just need the big 3. I have begun working on the varieties, and again im going to omit the Cobb, blank back, and OM overprint as I personally dont believe they qualify. Two of those are simply printing errors, and the 3rd is a privately issued card. I have been able to pick up a couple of decent backs on the cheap, notably a pair of Sov460's at 30 bucks each, and a gorgeous AB460 in an SGC 50 for just $125. I have shelled out strong money for my Hindu brown, and my Carolina Brights, as well as paying fair money on the B&L auction BL350 that recently sold. I also recently bought a nice (yet to get it) Cycle 460. Im just 2 months into this wonderful hobby, and the monster has a very strong grip on me!

That BL350 is small potatos compared to the Drum. I tried explaining to the wife why i'll be withdrawing possibly $2500 to buy a "baseball card". Her eyes glazed over and her expression turned to disgust. Even though i'll be trying to buy the card strictly because I love this hobby, its easier to buy if I can try to convince her the card will be at least worth 75% of what we pay in 5 years time.

I always buy collectibles with this frame of mind. If I can lose no more than 25% of my original investment a few years down the road, I have no problem paying for the "ownership rights" for at least a few years!

Just a low grade Red Hindu Magee for me. The Uzit has massive eye appeal to me. One day I will get one......

Chicago

I don't think you need to worry about getting your money back from a Drum reverse. In 2005-5years ago, you could have got that Drum for about 1k-in 2000 probably 200.

There were a bunch(about 15 to 20) Drums on ebay around 2001 or 2002 and the best one only reached 1k-most were around 300 to 500-they were all vg to vg-ex.

I remember a PSA 4 Atz/Drum selling for $1600 on ebay around 2003.

Jim,

I agree with you on this one. With so much interest in T206 backs, its a simple supply/demand equation. Despite the new finds of Drums --- there just aren't all that many in a '2' or better floating around. I don't have population numbers but I'd guess 150 or so to fulfill the demand for those people who want one.

Regards,
Scott

years ago, i was obsessed with rare backs...it culminated about 2 years when i had a very high grade group, before selling them off with Barry...some of my favs were: PSA 4 Drum, PSA 8 Polar Bear, PSA 3 Uzit, PSA 4 Lenox, PSA "A" BL 460, etc...

rare backs are extremely fun (and challenging) to collect.

Default What's rare

I have on hand

Chance batting, Black Lenox, PSA 2
Burch fielding, Brown Lenox, PSA 4

But also a half dozen EPdG or SOV 460, various grades;
1 Carolina Brights, PSA 3.5

1 beat-to-hell UZIT, identified by PSA as "trimmed!"

Why are we doing this again?

Bob

I've been working on my brand set for 2+ years now.
Still looking for a couple but have knocked out some tough ones.
UZIT, BL460, Lenox and Drum - all HOFers.
A decent shape Red Hindu has been elusive.
