Maybe this belongs in the "pickups" thread, but it is a real milestone for me so I'm sticking it here. A bunch of you know I have had a long "relationship" with the M116 set, including the Old Cardboard article and so on. Well, with the acquisition of the dastardly Harry Coveleskie, I have finished off all 72 of the "300 Series" cards. I still have a couple of lower-series HOFers to get, but they are easy to find whenever I have the scratch: Coveleskie was the last big rare bear.
Thanks a million to Rob Adesso for pointing me toward Harry-- and thanks to all the many other collectors who have contributed to the fun over the past few years-- Tim |

Kudos for tracking down that last one--he sure was an evasive target for you. Ain't no one escapes Sheriff Tim once he gets his sights fixed.
May your good fortune spread among us all as we pursue those missing pieces for our collections, and congrats again! |

Hey Tim,
You ARE da Man! Congratulations, and you know I'll have a little Citadelle, very dry, with a twist to celebrate your milestone. Wish you were here so that we could toast your achievement together. Maybe December? Cheers, Mike |

Congrats Tim! Awesome set to complete and filled with those "5" and above toughies from the rarity scale! Looks like the Coveleskie is a "6" which is very scarce. Nice job.

Congrats to the Timster! :-)
I'm glad the Coveleskie fell your way. One of these days collectors will learn to appreciate how beautiful the M116 set is and how tough it is to finish a set. I have had more satisfaction and enjoyment with my T207 and M116 sets than any sets I own. Both undervalued, both underappreciated, both great sets. See you in Baltimore! Bob M. |

Undervalued Bob? Not sure I can agree with you there, but maybe after I finish both sets I'll be onboard.

Rob-- yes, in Bob's world sets immediately become undervalued at the moment you complete them ... actually, in my world too
![]() Thanks for all your encouragement, guys-- I know posts like this are sort of vanity posts, but every once in a while everybody deserves a little of that, I guess. Tim |

Bob and Tim,
When did you guys start your M116 sets? I remember buying a couple about 10 years ago off of ebay and thinking that they were so cheap that there must be something wrong with them. Bob, what were the last few cards you needed for your set? Also, do you guys collect the blue backgrounds or just have player sets? Anyone else out there collecting this set? Rob |

Rob,
I bought my first M116s about ten years ago-- three really nice commons from our own David Rudd for $25 each-- come to think of it, that does sound cheap now. I was hooked pretty much from that point, although my progress was never fast. One notable thing about M116s is how difficult it is to find large groups of them. I basically bought mine 1, 2, and 3 at a time. I decided to go with pastel poses only. I have some blues but I'm not too worried about them-- when I find a good deal on ones I need, I do it. Same with alternate backs like the low-series "300" backs. I guess I'm a "pose guy" rather than a "variation guy" I did know a few other people who were doing the whole set, but I think some of them have evaporated or given up in recent years. Bob M. and Scott B. are the only complete-set-owners I can think of right now. Tim |

Tim- isn't there one card, maybe Seymour, Baltimore (just a guess from memory) that is unique? Do set collectors consider themselves complete without it?

Yes, "set collectors" do-- this one does, certainly. There are sets and there are variations. As you well know, not everyone feels the need to do variations (especially when they are nearly unique like Seymour).

Rob- I started about 6 years ago and I will echo Tim's thoughts about how seldom they come up in groups, I bought almost every one of them individually which is why the cost was a little more than I would have thought.
My last 2 cards were Wood (last one) and Wagner pastel. The Wagners are out there, they are just expensive. The Woods are extremely hard to find. I thought I had a master set until I read Tim's article (thanks Tim ![]() If you get them in nice shape (and because they were mailed rather than sold with caramels or tobacco they often are sharp) they are great looking. Great set with tons of scarce cards to make it an adventure in the 300 series backed cards. tbob |
