Congrats Joe on another Wolverine. How many more for a complete Detroit subset? I don't mind lower grades when the images are strong.

Bruce Kasarda helped me as well with the fifth and final pose I needed of Billy Shindle. Shindle is rated as top 100 3rd baseman by Bill James (95th) largely for his defensive skills for which there may not be a 19th century equal (tough to prove). Shindle began his career with Detroit as a back-up to Deacon White including 22 games in 1887. His connection to the World Championship team is the reason I began collecting him.

1888 examples of all five poses (was also issued cards in 1889 & 1890).

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Awesome McPhee cabinet. I used to own the Cincinnati Team Cabinet from the same issue which included the same McPhee portrait pictured on yours.

It's a postcard, Dan. I know of a couple of others. I picked it up from my friend, Chris. I love the sweater he's wearing with the B on the left sleeve.

Saw the two scorecards in the Leland's upcoming auction...just awesome. So many nice things...SO LITTLE MONEY! Oh well... I'm really happy with this card. Sort of the first official baseball memorabilia collector who owned a bar. Just doesn't get better than that.

I highly recommend this show to anyone in the area. HUGE turnout. Very big show. Lots of cards in those funny plastic holders. Some nice pre-war stuff. Many sports heroes signing autographs. And, I picked up a few Planet of the Apes cards for two bucks a piece to add to my cards I had when I was 9!

Greg

Steve,

That is Michael "Nuf Ced" McGreevy. Head of the Royal Rooters in Boston who followed the Nationals then Americans from about 1895-1918. Ran a bar called the Third Base. Would be considered the king of pre-war Memorabilia collectors. Here's a cabinet I have of his bar taken in 1903 after the first Worlds Series. The plaque on the wall welcomes home the Americans (later known as the Red Sox)after their victory in the first WS.

He also printed these song cards up for the 1st WS as well. Sort of an early 20th Century version of those HORRIBLE cow bells.

Hi-
I picked these up at the Wilmington MA show this weekend. I particularly like the Marshall & Ball because of the image, date (1882) and price (less than the pencil price on the back). I picked up the E90-1 because of the odd stamp on the back (and of course the price). I also picked up a nice Clothing catalog with a really nice 19th century baseball game image on the cover (of course the catalog is from 1912) that I will post on the Memorabilia side, and a few other low end cards.

Dan K., this Baltimore strain of shingles is bad, but it can't get any worse unless I start collecting variations of each pose.

I'm a bit surprised the other Baltimore OJ collectors allowed me to pick up all five poses as I did. I expected more competition on some of the poses from Tom Lawrie, David Seaborn, Dan McKee, and other N172 Baltimore collectors. I figured it would take more than a couple years to collect all five poses.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

I know what you mean Matt. They used the same image, but got rid of the background for some reason. I'm not sure what stadium the shot was taken in.

David,
http://www.oldcardboard.com/foreign/japan/29-shonen-club-pc/29-shonen-club-pc.asp?cardsetID=1422

Old cardboard says that the card has been said to depict the first homerun hit of the 1926 season even though the card is a 1929 issue. I went to basball-almanac.com
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teamstats/schedule.php?y=1926&t=NYA

it shows the first game being at Fenway which the yankees won 12-11.

Anyone else think it looks like Fenway?

It's hard to tell for sure, but this old postcard showing the right field side of Fenway looks a lot like the background in the Ruth photo which would be down the left field side.
