Ever since I won my lone example from Lew Lipset, I have tried to learn more about this very scarce set. From what I gather, there are very few examples that come up for auction. Recently, ebay had an example in poor condition that went for over two thousand dollars, about on par with other examples in this condition. Here is the link: |

I heard he was Jewish (does anyone know a Levy who isn't?); also, when a hoard of them was discovered by Ron Oser about 15-20 years ago, I think there were multiple copies of Levy. He used to show up with some regularity. I've even had one or two myself. Still a fantatstic and rare early type. |

On a side note - For those that may not have seen it - there was a cabinet card of the 1889 Oakland team on ebay a couple of weeks ago that contained some of these players. Unfortunately, I was an underbidder but Rhys managed to picked it up (hope Rhys doesn't mind me mentioning it). Here is the ebay link: |

This is a fun post, as these are some of the best looking 19th century cards IMO, and they're a bit pricey for my budget. So it's nice to see these cards, thanks to all who have shared. |

I had a snipe set up for the N321 Powers that sold on Ebay last night that was about $250 higher than what the card ultimately sold for, but I chickened out and canceled it with about 45 minutes left to go. Argh. Beautiful cards. |

Not a problem, I was actually re-reading the article to find out what you said about the uncut sheet. No wonder I couldn't find it! Here is the same "proofs" I believe: |

Jeff - Catchers sometimes wore two gloves during that period. Usually the fingers were cut out of the glove on the throwing hand though. |

Wow ! Thank you for posting the SF Pionner's UnCut Sheet.. beautiful ! I would very much appreciate any more information / links people can provide regarding the California League, but, moreso, the SF Pioneers. I have the wonderful book - Always on Sunday and love it. Have been trying to find more info and hit a brick wall.

Aren't those "proofs" cut from an advertising sheet? |

I would think there is a distinct possibility that there was once a color advertising banner for the N321 set and those "proofs" were cut from it. They are identical to the N28 and N29's found without the Allen & Ginter printed at the bottom. |
