Strip cards....

When it comes to the strip cards, I know nothing. For the most part I think they are ugly and not in anyway appealing. However, I'm curious to know what are deemed the "elite of the elite" when it comes to the W's. Are there issues that you woudln't be able to pass by if they came up for sale? Any of the series that are just really coveted?

W514's are popular because the set is large, and there is a great Joe Jackson that was released right around the time of the Black Sox scandal.

I like some of the strips and am going for the Big Head set (1916). If I had to pick one as the most elite I would probably pick the 1915 W-Unc series....even commons in decent condition will go for over $200 ea....The 1921 W-Unc series is also very costly...and I have seen less than a half a dozen in total....It's the one on the bottom row, far left, of Johnston (sic)

The range of W cards is quite broad. Sporting Life cabinets (W600) are one of the more expensive W cards. Exhibit cards are also W cards. As for the traditional strip cards, W553 would have to be one of the nicer and more expensive sets.

W551.. I have seen that issue get some very high prices in certain auctions. It is a small set with all ten players that are great.

Nice catch on the W600 Glen. I am not sure what Burdick was thinking on that one. I guess M600 would be more appropriate. Also since this is the place for it I guess this W575-1/E-Unc (my opinion) would be the most I have ever had to shell out for a strip card...I think this might be akin to paying an exhorbitant amount for a common you don't care about in order to complete a set, or get closer to completion...

Dave, the W-Series is sort of the "everything else" category as opposed to the "strip card" category which it is often mistaken for. Anything that wasn't reasonably classified in one of the other categories got grouped into the W-cards. An example is W503, these cards are absolutely candy/caramel cards, but since there is no absolute proof...they get classified as W-503.

Many cards in the W's are not strip cards nor were they cut out of anything.

This is a tough set, Ive only seen about 5 baseball and maybe 10 boxers total, very tough set and still very unknown.


PS I also like the set that Leon's Team card is from, thats a very tough set too. 1915 WUnc. (B&W cards)

I love strips. I find them very interesting and appealing both for how nice the images are and how bad they are. As seen in this thread there is a great difference from set to set and some maintain the cartoon look while others are nicer with photos and almost look like "real" cards.

Also I believe the 1915 UNC set is now listed as 1916 at least that is what my Joe Jackson says and that is what SGC labeled both Jacksons in recent aucitons. It was listed as 1915 in the past.

As a shameless plug I would like to get a for more of the cards from this set to keep that Jackson company so if you got any you would part with for cash or trade please drop me a line.

Leader Novelty, w553, Uncle Jacks and w517 minis are all small duotone cards of about the same size and date of issuance.
At about 1.75x2.75" the attractiveness of each set is more easily defined by personal preference than by measurable design differences.
All cards from these sets are uncommon, some moreso than others.
Yet Uncle Jacks cards yield a premium price typically multiples of the other sets.

The only real difference here is that R317 is not a hand cut card. Quite a premium for that tho. Maybe there is more.
