The top 10 sets?

Hello,

I am relatively new at collecting but would like to know what the top 10 "obtainable" sets are. I understand there are some sets that have a couple extremely rare cards, but I do not want to try and start a set where the only way to get the card is through an auction house. Please let me know your opinions.

I have a feeling a lot of people's opinions will differ but I would guess that the following are the most attainable:

Tobacco:
1.) T201
2.) T206 (minus big 4)
3.) T205
4.) T207

Caramel:
1.) E95
2.) E96
3.) E98

Of course, by being "attainable", do you also mean cost prohibitive? I think all of the sets mentioned above can be readily attainable but obviously there are some big money cards in each that will still set you back some $$$.

In no particular order, the ones that are possible and attainable and somewhat iconic of the era-

T206 (with 519 cards)
'15 Cracker Jack
'33 Goudey
'34 Goudey
'41 Playball
T205 (without variations)
E95
N28 (baseball only)
N29 (baseball only)
N162 (baseball only)

As someone who worked on "attainable" prewar sets.

I think the least daunting is the T201 set. Having 50 cards, plentiful, and pretty cost effective. Of course, the images are not of the players likeness which is a little off putting.

The most fun I had was with the 1933 Goudey. Great set with plenty of HOF'ers. Commons can be had relatively cheap, and even the big cards such as the Ruth's and Gehrig's show up as graded examples on ebay and through dealers. (To avoid the big auction houses like you hoped)

You might also try the 1936 Goudey set. Only 24 cards, quite a few Hall of Famers, none of them particularly rare. One downside is that there are no really big name HOFers -- no Gehrig, DiMaggio, Foxx, Hornsby, or Dizzy Dean. But there is a Mickey Cochrane, a Paul Waner, a Hank Greenberg, and a Chuck Klein.
