Default R315 help

Posted By: Jeff Schwarz

My father and I have collected together since the 1983 Chicago National, and he recently went into an assisted living facility. Upon getting his collection, I have been going through everything and was going over his R315s. We have purchased numerous price guides over the years and there seems to be some discrepancy on that card issue. What guide do most people go with? Also, I found some cards, like the Bishop below that have the team name spelled two ways. My Bing Miller card has that also. Is there some definitive work that has all these included?

In addition, I found this Traynor card with the "h" left off of Pittsburgh on one of the cards.

Finally, does the Stephenson have a different font, or is it just more ink?

I still need Benton and Zachary if anyone has them. Thanks for the help!
Jeff

The R315s are actually strip cards with all or most being cut from vertical strips of 3 cards.

There are even more variations that you show...

The cards are found in B&W, and also a scarcer Yellow cards stock.

R315's can be found with the player's name inside a small box at bottom corner, another type has the player's name in a hand lettered style near the bottom border, and both of these types can be found with the position and team name typed in the bottom border or with nothing in the bottom border. There are also caption variations known (like you show above).

Definitely two different fonts. Actually, all of your cards shown have two different fonts, and IMO, the creamier ones, e.g. those like the Pittsburgh Traynor, have the less frequently seen font.

The guides are not great on these--I would use the Old Cardboard description (click on banner icon) as a rule of thumb.

Edited to add: ignore the reference on OC to this being a 1928 issue, as it was issued after that date too or instead.

Thanks for the help thus far. I cannot find a decent checklist. The Old Cardboard website does not have a checklist. The Standard Catalog (2000 edition) lists the 46 players alphabetically. Is there any checklist that includes players with different captioning, different fonts, and different team variations? Thanks again.

There should be some decent stuff in the archives here if you use the search function--I seem to recall this set being discussed not long ago.

It's my understanding that there are no cards in all four types--A&B depict the same players and so do C&D. I have never seen any detailed discussion of the different fonts, use of abbreviations, etc.

Jeff, I have added a detailed cross-checklist and gallery for the R315 set to the Old Cardboard website at http://www.oldcardboard.com/r/r315/r315.asp?cardsetID=873. It might not address all of your questions, but should answer some. Hope it helps.

As you see, there are a few questions in the checklist and a missing card image in the gallery. If anyone can supply any of the missing information, I will be happy to update the pages accordingly. Thanks to all.

Lyman

PS: the 1928 date that comes from a database will be updated the next time the database is uploaded. --LJH

Edited to refine link and correct typo.
