Where do you buy your liquor?

I was talking to my class about early baseball players and how they had to work during the off-season just to make ends meet. I also discussed great hitters of all-time during that same lecture. So Joe Jackson was mentioned. After the following class, one of my students gave me this picture. It is not from the period. It was in a fairly recent magazine. But it is an interesting picture of Shoeless Joe.

Back in 1939 average minimum wage was 0.40 cents an hour. I see some of those prices 2.45, 1.95, 2.20 were out of the range for a lot of people.

I recall the story about Cobb coming to visit Jackson in his liquor store after they had not seen each other for many years. Story was that Cobb, after being ignored by Jackson said to him, "What's the matter Joe, don't you know me?", to which Jackson sadly replied, "I know you, Ty, I thought you didn't want to know me."

I believe the original of this picture sold in an auction of Jackson's personal effects, some years back.

Vic Raschi, Roy Campanella and Roger Maris had liquor stores, as did former heavyweight champ Primo Carnera. Others had restaurants, bars or nightclubs, like Mickey Mantle, Jack Dempsey, Jim Jeffries, Jim Braddock, Sugar Ray Robinson, etc. Some went into sales and distribution, where name recognition for an ex-athlete was valuable in opening doors with bar owners.

Sal Maglie had a liquor store in the Niagara Falls, NY area. WWII-era pitcher Ace Adams ran one down in Georgia.

For years Don Drysdale had a bar called Drysdale's Dugout in Van Nuys, CA. Used to go by it all the time when I lived out there.

Funny to see George Jeffcoat behind a bar! Jeffcoat, the older brother of fellow MLB alumnus Hal Jeffcoat, was deeply religious and became a Baptist minister. He was apparently haunted by dark thoughts and took his own life in 1976.

I didn't know that about Jeffcoat. He is not listed as a "baseball suicide" at Baseball Almanac.com.

I forgot I even had it...when you made mention of Jeffcoat I looked through my photos because I knew I had another of him. I had a third photo of him that was unsigned that I sent off to another net54er as he needed one for his collection. I guess it's not just his autograph is hard to come by, but also original photos of him in a Dodgers uniform.

Shoeless Joe died in 1951, and certainly did look far older than his years. There is one classic photo of him cracking an egg into a frying pan that always leaves me rolling on the floor. Apparently Joe Jackson Fine Liquors did not sell toothbrushes!
